Newark's Hate Crime Awareness Week 2020 will start with Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping opening an exhibition in the Buttermarket of the Roma during the Holocaust on Saturday 10th October.

It features the Robert Dawson Collection of Photographs provided by the National Holocaust Centre from their exhibition this summer, The Nazi Regime: Persecution of Gypsies, to mark the internationally recognized day of commemoration of the Roma Genocide on 2nd August.

Newark Stop Hate Crime wants to share this exhibition with a wider audience to increase understanding of the long history of persecution and misunderstanding of Gypsy Travellers.

The free exhibition can be viewed through the windows of one of the units in the Buttermarket from Friday 9th October to Monday 19th October inclusive.

Newark Advertiser covered Newark Hate Crime Awareness Week on their website and in print.

In 2019, Hate Crime Awareness Week runs on 12th-19th October.

On Saturday 12th, there will be a stall in the Saturday market.

We also have a unit in the Buttermarket, behind the Town Hall, with posters and videos. There will also be art materials available so children coming along can have a go at making their own poster either to add to the display or take home.

Posters will be judged on Tuesday 15th October by Gary Headland (CEO of Lincoln College Group, which includes Newark College), Inspector Heather Sutton (Nottinghamshire Police), and John Bearpark (retired school teacher, artist and member of Newark Quaker Meeting).

On Thursday 17th October at 1pm, Newark churches, religious groups and worshipping communities have been invited to join us for discussion about how to raise awareness that bystanders can report hate incidents and intervene to stop hate crimes and support victims. We will provide soft drinks and nibbles – you are welcome to bring your lunch or food to share.

Friday 18th October sees prizes given for the winning poster entries in the Buttermarket at noon.
